Social Networking is a term used to describe a fairly recent breed of Web sites, also referred to as online communities. It seems that social networking is absolutely here to stay. Social networking is popular because it allows nobodies to be somebody.
So what exactly is social networking? Online social networking is a way of communicating with friends, business colleagues, classmates and others through the Internet. A great example of social networking is the hugely popular MySpace. It focuses on shared connections between people. The whole point of social networking is to create a network of friends. It is about meeting those that have like interests and being free to express yourself. The power of social networking is unstoppable.
Joining a social networking site enables you to gain introductions to many people who you would not otherwise be able to gain access to. Social features provided by most community sites are blogging, email, groups, classifieds and forums. One of the amenities provided by some community sites are free chat rooms or conference rooms. Sharing photos, hosting or finding events, getting news and joining new conversations are the some of the great ways people are using these sites. And you thought social networking was all about text-messaging among bored teenagers. Many of these networks offer the option to design your own web page, where visitors can learn a little about who you are, what you do, and how your knowledge and experience might be of assistance to them.
So if you have not tried social networking, you might want to try it and see what the fuss is about. The friends that you can make are just one of the many benefits to social networking online. Most networking communities are free but they do require that you go through a registration process. To start finding new friends, you must create a profile first and tell others a little about yourself. Without a personal profile, it is difficult or impossible to tell what your interests are. You do need to protect yourself online when using online social networking websites, by watching what you post online and enter in your profile. Only use your first name in your profile, blog or forum posts. In your profile if you are required to list the city and the state that you live in, you may want to think about using a nearby city or town, especially if you live in a small town. Another great tip is to only give out general information leaving out any details regarding your children, where you live, financial information and exactly when you are going on vacation.
