10 Ways to Organize Hair Accessories

by Jan Hayner

Did you ever wonder why they don’t make a really good container for hair ribbons and barrettes?

There is really nothing that you can use to hang a scrunches’ on and make it look nice and be able to get it off without stretching it all out of shape.

However, there are ways of organizing hair accessories if you use your imagination.

Well, just sit back and think of what you can do to show off these pretty pieces and still be able to find everything.

1. Take a ribbon, make a bow out of it, and use the tails of the ribbon to put barrettes on.

2. Use a shoe (child size) organizer and use all of the small little pockets to put in barrettes, scrunches’, hair spray, combs, brushes and other hair care needs and hang it on the inside of your closet door.

3. Scrunchies can be displayed nicely when you thumbtack a piece of ribbon to the inside closet door or linen closet door and attach them using miniature clothes pins purchased at the craft store.

4. Pony tail holders – see #3 or put a ribbon on your mirror frame and attach the pony tails using the clothes pins

5. Get small decorative containers from the dollar store and put them on your dresser, one for ponytail holders, one for scrunchies, one for barrettes etc.

6. Take a small piece of PVC tubing and make two holes (acrossed from each other) about 1 inch from the end, insert a piece of string, ribbon or rope to use for hanging on a hook of the clothes pole in your closet. Now put all of your scrunchies on the tubing.

7. Get a small size parts bin from the hardware department; used to store nails, screws, nuts, bolts etc. Label the drawers according to what you have in them or maybe according to color. Get some pretty contact paper and put this on the outside of the box to blend in with the colors of your room.

8. Claw Clips (Jaw Clip’s) are great but what do you do to keep them from getting broke? Use a PVC pipe (#6); put them in a plastic shoebox.

9. Hair Sticks or Hair Combs; Take a piece of Styrofoam and spray paint it to match your room, make a design out of it if you like (heart, diamonds, butterfly) and stick all of your pretty sticks and Combs in here (along the edge) Then paste one of your favorite hair photos in the middle. Add a ribbon to the top, make a bow, and hang it up.

10. Hair Bands can stretch out easily so you want to make sure that you store these in a plastic container; Hang with miniature clothespins or put in a small plastic bag and hang them up.

11. If they are the ‘hard’ headband, get a big stuffed doll to set in a corner of your room and place your headbands on her head, paint a large size Styrofoam ball and put them on there for a nice display.

Now you have some good ideas to get you started and I am sure you will come up with some more of your own.

As the designer for over twenty years of Andrea’s Beau, a hair ornament company, I’ve found an easy and attractive way to store hard and soft headbands by covering a fat roll of paper towels (or remove some of the bulk if you want it smaller) with a pretty fabric and stuff the ends of the material into the tube holes on either side. Top the ends off with a large flower or oversized button and you’ve got a lovely headband display!
