Book Review: No Limits – How I Escaped the Clutches of Corporate America to Live the Self-Employed Life of My Dreams

By Janet Barclay, MVA

No Limits – How I Escaped the Clutches of Corporate America to Live the Self-Employed Life of My DreamsNo Limits – How I Escaped the Clutches of Corporate America to Live the Self-Employed Life of My Dreams was written by Sara Morgan, a software developer who has previously authored several technical books, including Programming Microsoft® Robotics Studio. Morgan left the world of traditional employment to become an independent consultant after deciding she wanted a career that would accommodate her lifestyle, rather than the other way around.

You might expect something very dry, coming from an author with a technical background, but that is not the case at all. As the title indicates, this is not so much a manual for starting your own business, but the author’s personal account of the benefits of self-employment and the steps she took to achieve her goals. Recognizing that everyone’s situation is unique, she includes interviews with seven other individuals who have left the corporate world and are now successfully self-employed. It’s very inspiring, with wonderful quotes scattered throughout, such as:

And in the end it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.

Abraham Lincoln

Although No Limits is primarily motivational, it also contains valuable practical information, including an outline of the personal skills required for self-employment, tips for deciding what type of business you should start and where to go from there, and important issues such as accounting, taxes, and insurance. With less than 150 pages, it’s an easy read which can help you determine whether or not self-employment is for you and overcome any apprehension you may have about leaving your day job, before devoting time to studying more in-depth material.

No Limits is also available in a Kindle edition.
