I recently conducted a survey to look at the relationship between an individual’s personality type and his or her organizing and time management style, and noticed that the majority of participants said they have a calendar system that works for them. As there are so many time management systems available, both paper-based and electronic, I thought it would be interesting to find out which calendar systems are most popular with each personality type, and asked my ezine subscribers and visitors to my website to describe their time management system, what they like and dislike about it, and their personality type according to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®). Then there are the few who bring their own environmentally-friendly cloth bags to the grocery store every week.

What does this have to do with time management? Really… nothing… except the analogy that even though times have changed the options, the choices are still yours to make. What works for someone else may not work for you.

Paper plannerWith the growing popularity of laptops, tablet PCs, and PDA’s, more and more people are adopting some form of electronic calendar system. A large number people, however, prefer the familiarity of a paper planner - and who could blame them? Although electronic calendars offer many benefits in terms of efficiency, they don’t provide the satisfaction derived from putting pen to paper, the joy of reminiscing while reviewing the past year’s events and accomplishments, or the thrill of a blank new calendar along with the anticipation of what will be written in it over the coming months.

In the past, most offices had a receptionist whose responsibilities included scheduling appointments for clients, customers, or patients, but with the increase in one-person businesses, as well as automated attendants in larger offices, this is seldom the case any more. As a result, if you are working with a client when a call comes in, you have to choose between interrupting your work to deal with the call, or letting the caller leave a voice mail message and hoping you’ll be able to connect with them before they decide to book their appointment with your competitor.

You can save valuable time and reduce the risk of losing business by using an online appointment booking system. Enter your hours of operation and available staff, and clients can visit the site to schedule or cancel their own appointments.
