1. Dissatisfied with their present employment situation.

2. Out of work due to being laid off or downsizing by their employer.

3. A need to be home more with young children, an infirm family member, or aging parents.

4. A yearning to be their own boss.

Whatever your particular reason for exploring a home-based business, there are a few common steps you need to take in order to launch your business.

Although more and more small businesses are online every day, there are still some business owners who don’t think they need a website, because they only provide services locally and not globally.

Keep in mind that over 70% of the population in Canada and the USA are Internet users, and for an increasing number of people, the Internet is the first place – if not the only place – they look for information. Therefore, if you do not have a website, you may be overlooked by prospective clients or media contacts seeking experts to interview.

Running your own business, especially alone, you’re bound to get stuck and feel like you’ve reached a plateau or worse still, you feel as if you just can’t gain forward-moving motion. The danger is not in getting stuck, but in prolonged inactivity — inertia. This phenomenon is frequently observed in entrepreneurs starting a new business.

If you are thinking about running your own business from home, be prepared to work hard. While managing your own business can be very difficult it can also be very rewarding. Spending more time with your family and feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment are only a few benefits to running your own business. However, setting your home office up properly from the get go is vital to your success.

If you have a family it is important to get them on board and make sure they understand and appreciate any boundaries that you have established. For instance, your office should be free from distractions and a quiet place for you to work. If at all possible give them small tasks to do so they feel part of the process.

Your family and friends don’t seem to understand that you’re working. They ask you to run errands, expect you to handle chores, and want to chat on the phone. When you see the pile of laundry or stack of dishes sitting there waiting, you may be tempted to take time out from work to clean up a bit.

You’d like to keep your house livable and be available to the people you care about, but it’s just too much for one person to manage. When can you get any work done?

As the job market gets more and more unstable, many people are venturing into setting up their own businesses. It is definitely far more rewarding to start your own business than live with the fear of being laid off. You can be on the driver’s seat and take control of your destiny rather than be at the mercy of the bosses. You can also cut out the tension involved with coworkers and office politics.

The saying “you have to spend money to make money” is too true. In order to get your business off the ground or even to expand an existing business it is necessary to lay out quite a bit of money. If you do well, you will make the money back and more, and it is a good investment. But no matter how you get the money, it needs to be spent initially.

Like most people, you probably don’t have much spare cash lying around. Even if your business is doing well and growing rapidly, you still would not want to tie up huge sums of your own capital into upgrading your venture. This is where business financing comes in.
