Last week was the week of job interview horror stories. One client was on his way to an interview when he got distracted and ran into a guard rail. Nobody was hurt, but his car was damaged and could no longer be driven. Another client got into her car for her interview with plenty of time and everything she needed, except her wallet and cell phone. This would have been bad enough but then her car broke down. She finally got the car started again, but was late to her interview and had no way to call.

As we approach the end of the year, it seems to get more and more hectic. I thought I’d share some strategies with you that I start off using with my time management coaching clients.
In fact, recently one of them told me, “I can’t believe it; I actually have a life again”. This was after we started incorporating some of the principles I’m sharing with you below.

Q. Is there any way to make life with 2 young children run more smoothly?
A. Yes, set up a daily schedule and keep to it as much as possible.
A schedule provides structure. “When structure speaks, children listen.” By providing a simple daily schedule, you help your child to feel secure. It provides consistency. It is the beginning of the discipline process. Amid all the chaos of today’s life, you will be able to accomplish as much as possible by following a routine. Here are some helpful guidelines.

OK, so in case you haven’t heard yet a Virtual Assistant (VA) is a real, live person who is highly skilled in their niche business market segment. Yes, a real live person! Don’t let the word virtual confuse you here. Virtual is simply the term used to describe the fact that you as a business owner can indeed employ business support personnel who are NOT local.

It’s no secret that December is the busiest month in the retail industry, as people shop for Christmas presents as well as other products and services for the festive season. If you’re in a different industry, you may find that business is slow at this time of year. In this case, you’re lucky, because this gives you an opportunity to review your activities and achievements over the past year.

There are two ways to start your day.
The first is to dive in; tackling whatever is in front of you. You might check your emails. This is an interesting beginning as it is always possible something fun and new came in since you last looked.
Email is fun! And of course - it is important! But then you come up for air after working in answering some emails, following through on some links (weren’t those sites fascinating?) and figuring out how you can use the information you just overloaded yourself with. You look at the time - and its noon. Where did the time go?

Ready to write an article? You even made the big step of scheduling time to do it. So here it is, and you’re sitting at your desk, staring blankly at the screen. Just like you’ve been doing for the last two weeks.
And still no article. Despite the fact it was supposed to go out 10 days ago. Ugh.
Those weirdos who can send out an article every week. Or even more strange, those newspaper columnists that write every single day. They must be from another planet.

1. Plan the following day at the end of each day.
This is the time your mind is most clear. If you try to plan your day in the morning, you become distracted by your e-mail, your voicemail, the telephone, your employees, your customers, and so forth. It’s nearly impossible to think rationally about your priorities when you’re being pulled in 10 different directions.
It’s also a good idea to plan the following week at the end of each week, plan the following month at the end of each month, and plan the following year at the end of each year. Make this part of your regular routine. If you follow no other piece of advice on this list, follow this one. I guarantee you this simple change will increase your productivity more than you can imagine.

Eat your frog? By now you’re wondering if I’ve gone stark raving mad! No, I’m not mad.
I first learned of this principle from Brian Tracy.
Your frog is the most important task of the day. It is the one thing which, if done quickly and effectively, will ensure your greatest success.

Life is such a whirlwind, isn’t it? If you’re anything like me, it often seems like the weeks go by in a blur of activity…and then it’s weekend again. Or the weekends go by so quickly and when Monday comes around, you feel like you’ve just started to relax and the week is upon you once again.
The problem with this is that we never have a sense of peace, calm and control. A feeling that we are directing the course of our own lives.
