How many times have you told yourself that you really should get organized? You may have promised yourself that you’ll do it and you’ve even set aside whole weekends to finally get the job done. Somehow, the weekends come and go, and it still isn’t done.

You know it is going to take a lot of time and effort, so the question is: “Why bother?”

Getting organized is a very personal thing. Just like there is no one system that will work for everyone there is no universal reason to be organized. However, it is necessary to figure out why it is important to YOU. Figuring this out can serve as the push you need to start you going and keep you motivated.

How many times have you said, “I just don’t have enough time” or “I wanted to get more finished today, but I ran out of time”? We seem to start the day off great in the morning, and somehow by midday, we feel like we are ‘behind’ and are constantly play catch-up the rest of the day. Where did we go wrong, what happened?

It is because ‘time wasters’ start to take control of our lives. Little things keep popping up that we do not plan for and before you know it, we run out of time.

How good are you at taking action on a thought you have? It is so easy to talk about action, but a completely different thing altogether to put it to practice.

There is a part in each of us that will let us know an action is needed, but once we allow our conscious thoughts time to weigh in, we talk ourselves right out of a great idea.

During one of my “Anticrastinate Your Way to Success” presentations for Sony Electronics, one particular woman kept on referring to a housewarming party she had been putting off. After she had mentioned this a number of times, I asked her when she had moved into her house. We all waited breathlessly for her answer, which came haltingly, “Five years ago.” It was time for her to move on! The house had to be pretty warm after five years, and if it wasn’t, a party wasn’t going to help. Who amongst her friends and colleagues (whom she had been promising for years she’d have over for this party) would really believe they were actually coming to a housewarming party? It would be more like a party which was apologizing for not having a housewarming party.

My clients, colleagues, and friends know I’m writing a book on procrastination, and that I’m also moving, selling my house in New Jersey and building one in Florida. I’ve rented a house (also brand new) in the neighborhood where I’m building, and was due to move in last week. However, Hurricane Frances delayed those plans, and I’m still stuck in NJ. Meanwhile, I’ve continued to make entries in the procrastination diary. Here’s one from the other day.

I am writing this with the din of jackhammers in the background. I am working on the weekend (surprising as that might be); feeling sorry for myself that I cannot get good quiet uninterrupted time in like I had planned.

I thought I would write an article on Procrastination since that is what I am doing now. I have more important things to do (please don’t take offense). I am going into a heavy travel schedule so I like to have a few posts written or at least roughed out so I can post to my blog (jimestill.com) quickly while I am on the road. So writing a post is not a terrible use of time.

One thing that I learned from bicycle racing (actually, I am not much of a bicycle racer but I do triathlons – my biking needs work) is the power of momentum. In bicycle racing the way to do better and use less energy is to pedal very, very fast and powerfully to start with, give it 120% and once you are up to speed, you can simply maintain a good even cadence.

Are you a victim of laziness, a main cause of procrastination?
