Imagine the following scenario. It’s Wednesday afternoon. You and a friend are having lunch at your favourite restaurant. After lunch you might go for a stroll, visit a local attraction, or just go home and read. It doesn’t matter which. Your phone and email are switched off, work is the farthest thing from your mind, and you’re committed to nothing more than simply relaxing. You return to the office the next morning, guilt-free and feeling rather energetic.

“Out of clutter, find Simplicity.
From discord, find Harmony.
In the middle of difficulty lies Opportunity.”
– Albert Einstein

Many who come to me for help feel their lives (or some parts of them) are difficult, cluttered, and discordant. Worse, they feel guilty because they can’t “balance” all the parts of their lives.

Don’t feel bad. You can balance a clock, car wheels, and sometimes a seesaw, but it’s hard to balance a life. And if you could, would you really want to?

Five Tips to Refresh and Renew Yourself in the New Year

Let’s face it: new years are not always “new”. Too often it feels like nothing more than a new calendar in which to write down pages of non-stop activities, project deadlines, social obligations, and commitments made by someone other than you.

SO stop! It’s time to plug into something that YOU choose-something that can renew your batteries and refresh your interest in work AND life. Unlike the bobble-headed figures that nod “yes” at every touch, you DO get to declare “time out” and place yourself first.

When my daughter was very young, she would wander into my office and want to chatter, see what I was doing and generally get my undivided attention. In the early days I tried to multitask and distract her while I continued to write that very important letter, or finish the project I was working on. Then I would feel guilty that I was wasting our precious time together on work stuff when I could be enjoying my time with her. I swear I could hear the song ‘Cat’s in The Cradle’ coming from somewhere in the room!

So I learned how to ’swap hats’ in an instant. From solopreneur to dad in 3 seconds flat. And I learned how to go back from dad to solopreneur in the same amount of time.

It’s such a small word but so difficult to use sometimes. We seem to use this word so easily with our spouse and children but have a hard time saying it to other people. So the trick is to figure out how and when to say no.

I’m not saying that you should be selfish and never help anybody out. However, most people are running around stressed because they’re saying yes to everybody but themselves.

1. Match your boss’s priorities to yours, so that you are in alignment with your company’s goals and vision.

2. Focus on the skills, projects, and assignments which will be used in your performance evaluation.

3. Exude trustworthiness. Under-promise and over-deliver on your assignments. Delivering on-time (or even early) shows that you are organized and dependable.

It often seems that our days are engulfed in a myriad of tasks. Today we have many responsibilities and many roles - spouse, parent, sibling, child, friend, and career worker. Do you find you lose yourself in your relationships, in your nurturing roles, and in the busyness of life? Does it seem like your life has become a series of tasks to complete, rather than moments to enjoy? We often get so caught up in the DOING that we forget to BE.

Several years ago I received a call from a woman who said she had been planning all year to take a two-week trip to Hawaii. She told me how she had madly spent the day trying to clean up her office before she left. Then she raced home, feeling frantic about how she was going to get everything done there before she left. Slowly she had that sinking feeling that although she could get away from it for two weeks, she would have to come back to it — sooner or later. Suddenly it occurred to her that she could use the money she was going to spend on her vacation on getting her act together — and not have to go back to chaos! So instead of going away for her vacation, she stayed home. She spent her vacation money, and one week of her vacation, organizing her home. The next week she went to a nearby resort to relax — and she truly did, knowing that she could return to a home about which she didn’t have to feel guilty.

As the last day of school arrives I feel the same tendency I had as a child… to drop everything and scream “let’s go play!” After all, extreme self-care is so important. I also wonder if we tend to use the summer as an excuse to procrastinate. So here are a few tips to integrate personal and business growth with a whole lot of fun.

1- What do you want to achieve by Labor Day-
