When you get an idea to do something, do you forge ahead with great gusto? That’s a great thing… if you’re ready for it. If you find that you’re struggling with more than just the logistics, strategy, or action plan, it’s quite possible that what you need to do is simply… wait! (”Impossible!”, you think?)

Stress sometimes gets a bad rap. It’s actually a useful and necessary part of life. Without it there would be little reason to invent, create, and live new and fascinating experiences. Stress often helps nudge us in a direction that is better for us. It gets us out of our comfort zones and into movement toward ideals or objectives and out of our ruts.

RECLAIM YOUR LIFE- LIVE IN BALANCE
“I don’t have time to get together with you. I have to finish this project.” Or the conversation might go like this. “I’ve been overwhelmed at work and I’m too tired.” Do these conversations or variations on the theme seem familiar? We have lost our ability to live in the moment and to be spontaneous. We are consumed by our “to do” lists and our responsibilities and obligations.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a formula if followed would be the answer to all of your problems and concerns. We are all intrigued by books that promise us a better life. And many of us are looking for the secrets of the ages that promise us enlightenment.
I know that was my quest at one time in my life. In the seventies I had very few responsibilities and was a student of Transcendental Meditation. The pursuit of enlightenment was the carrot I was searching for. Today with a family, career and other responsibilities I no longer think about enlightenment. I do think about being a more fulfilled person and becoming fully engaged with life. It is an exciting journey that is full of surprises and mystery.

Most of us start the day like we’re trying to catch a train. We wake up, grab a cup of coffee, look at the paper and listen to the news. We rush out of the house to make an appointment or deadline or to put the finishing touches on a project. From deadline to appointment it goes. When we leave work we have other responsibilities and obligations, and it doesn’t end until we go to sleep, and for some it still doesn’t end. We never do catch the train. We forgot one essential thing. We are the conductor and the train can’t go anywhere without us.

Some people find that sleeping less makes them less productive or lowers their energy levels. I find that the less I sleep, the more energy I have. You might find this tip works for you; you might find it does not. Try monitoring your sleep and your energy levels to see what works for you.

Being a busy working mom, I know first hand the challenges of stress and overwhelm. When I coach other busy women, creating more peace in their lives is a common goal I help them reach. Here are some tips I have used to create more practical peace in my life. Just because you don’t have the time to go to a mountain top to meditate, doesn’t mean you can’t take steps during your busy day to enjoy a more peaceful, flowing lifestyle.
Recognize your own ability to create peace:

We are constantly bombarded daily with requests for our time. While helping others can be very rewarding, at the same time we can feel distraught about constantly obligating ourselves to others while not fulfilling our own needs. We can feel distressed about constant commitments to do things we simply don’t have the time, energy or desire to do.
At times, we may immediately feel the urge to say no, but instead lose our courage, and concede yet again. The question is why? Is it because:

It’s okay to say no.
Such a small word but so difficult to use sometimes. We seem to use this word so easily with our spouse and children but have a hard time saying it to “other people”. So the trick is to figure out how and when to say no.
I’m not saying that you should be selfish and never help anybody out. However, most people are running around stressed because they’re saying yes to everybody but themselves.

In my coaching practice, I do meet many professionals who want to make some adjustments about the way they are living. Most of the time the fear is unwarranted because even the smallest adjustment is all that is needed to make a world of difference. It’s not a matter of giving up the life you know. Unless it is a health issue, even when large adjustments are indicated, it is not necessary to make major life changes overnight. Everything can be done gradually, step by step.
