Being a busy working mom, I know first hand the challenges of stress and overwhelm. When I coach other busy women, creating more peace in their lives is a common goal I help them reach. We are constantly bombarded daily with requests for our time. While helping others can be very rewarding, at the same time we can feel distraught about constantly obligating ourselves to others while not fulfilling our own needs. We can feel distressed about constant commitments to do things we simply don’t have the time, energy or desire to do.

At times, we may immediately feel the urge to say no, but instead lose our courage, and concede yet again. The question is why? Is it because:

It’s okay to say no.

Such a small word but so difficult to use sometimes. We seem to use this word so easily with our spouse and children but have a hard time saying it to “other people”. So the trick is to figure out how and when to say no.

I’m not saying that you should be selfish and never help anybody out. However, most people are running around stressed because they’re saying yes to everybody but themselves.

In my coaching practice, I do meet many professionals who want to make some adjustments about the way they are living. Most of the time the fear is unwarranted because even the smallest adjustment is all that is needed to make a world of difference. It’s not a matter of giving up the life you know. Unless it is a health issue, even when large adjustments are indicated, it is not necessary to make major life changes overnight. Everything can be done gradually, step by step.

I love kids’ movies that actually make it fun for adults to watch. A classic (and one of my favorites) is Toy Story. The best scene is when Buzz and Woody are lost at the gas station. Buzz tries to put things in perspective for Woody by saying, “This is no time to panic.” However, Woody’s frenzied reply was, “This is the PERFECT time to panic!” I guess it’s because I can relate so well to his reaction.

A hockey coach on “Making the Cut” (a Canadian reality show) this week gave his team a lesson about putting confidence and performance in their respective places. He compared it to a person steering a boat while pulling a water skier. When the driver steers the boat to the left, eventually the water skier will follow to the left too.
